Noteworthy Collabs By Kpop x Western Artists

Kpop has constantly been growing into one of the world’s biggest music industries, so it’s no surprise that a lot of artists from the world’s biggest market have wanted to work together with some of the top Korean idols! In today’s magazine we’ve picked just out 4 of the many notable collaborations between Korean and Western Artists.

Dua Lipa X BlackPink - Kiss and Make Up

The first song on our list is a collaboration between two of the biggest female acts in the world right now. Back in 2018 fans were both excited and intrigued when the collab was first announced and that enthusiasm turned into amazing achievements. The song was featured on Dua Lipa’s album ‘Dua Lipa: Complete Edition’ and the album sold 11,000 copies within the first week, and the song also debuted at number 93 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Since then the song went on to be certified platinum in Australia, gold in Italy and silver in the UK.

BTS (ft. Halsey) - Boy With Luv

Now everyone knows that every release from BTS is an instant global hit and this collab with Halsey was no exception. The song went down in history as it broke the record for most viewed online music video in 24 hours of release, garnering an incredible 74.6 million views - a record that BTS have only gone on to break multiple times. Only 2 months later, Billboard announced that the song had been certified platinum by the RIAA and the song also set the new record for the most music show wins in the 2010s in South Korea with 21 wins, another record which the band have since broken.

Jason Derulo, LAY & NCT 127 - Let’s Shut Up and Dance

SM Entertainment have shown continued interest in the US market, but the collaboration between artists from two of their groups EXO and NCT 127 was their first notable exchange with a western artist. Unlike the previous two songs that had upbeat, positive vibes, this song has a darker, more sexy, island vibe. Both Jason and the SM artists make the music video impressionable by showing off their suave and skilled dance moves, as well as representing their respective back yards from downtown Seoul to the tropical scenery of Jamaica seemingly representing his Haitian ancestry.

Steve Aoki & Monsta X - Play It Cool

Last on our list we have Monsta X and Steve Aoki. Monsta X are a group that have always been loyal to their American fans and have released many hits in English before, so it was no surprise when they released this amazing collaboration song in both Korean and English shortly after. DJ Steve Aoki is also an artist who has enthusiastically worked on many collaboration projects with many Kpop artists and he did not fail to deliver for Monsta X either. The two acts came together to create a high energy dance track, perfectly contrasting the heavy bass with Monsta X’s soothing smooth vocals.

The songs in this list are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the amazing results that can be created when artists from two of the world’s biggest music industries come together - name drop a few collaborations you’d like to see in future, who knows, they might just manifest!

We hope you look forward to the next KookyMag!
