If any of these are in your playlist, youāve already been listening to Chaz Jackson.
The American producer has worked behind the scenes on some of K-Popās biggest tracks for over a decade. Beyond K-Pop, his credits include Chris Brown, Kehlani, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Robin Thicke, and more.
We sat down with Chaz Jackson ā the producer behind Taeyang's <Open Up (feat. The Kid LAROI) > ā to talk about the story behind the track and what music means to him. An interview you can only find on Kooky!
A. It started before I even fully understood what was happening. I was with my former group, The Aristocrats, and we got a placement, my very first one actually. That was my introduction to K-pop, and I remember thinking, this is different. The standard was so high, and the attention to detail was unlike anything Iād experienced in Western production. I didnāt go looking for K-pop, it found me. And once it did, I never wanted to leave.
A. Everything is intentional. Every layer of sound, every vocal arrangement, every transition, nothing is accidental. The artists, the labels, the fans, they all hold the music to an incredibly high standard. That pressure actually brings out the best in me as a producer and writer. I love it.
A. The approach hasnāt changed much. Iāve always been focused on creating a strong sound and making sure melody is king. Music is the world's universal language that will never change. I'm thankful that God allows me to do this every day. It's amazing.
A. Purpose. Working with such incredible artists, and playing a role in the vision keeps me excited.
A. It was one of those things that felt aligned from the start. Taeyang is a legend, thereās no other word for it. When the opportunity came together, I didnāt overthink it. I just wanted to serve the moment and give him something that matched his artistry. I played the beat and he immediately said, āLetās start to this one.ā I also got to work on this one with Tone Stith who is now a good friend and is exceptionally talented and we all created it together. The conversation was easy, the creative process felt natural. Some collaborations you have to force, this wasnāt one of them. Good times.
A. Itās emotional, but the track gives it that edge. Thereās a vulnerability in it that I think people will feel immediately, but underneath that thereās this undeniable energy, almost like a release. We wanted it to feel like something that sits between worlds, between genres, between cultures. That felt right for who Taeyang is and what this moment represents for him.
A. Ahh so many! The intro, the melodies, the story. Everything. Itās Taeyang and The Kid LAROI!
A. It was actually exciting ā more fun than difficult. Although they have different styles thatās the beauty of music. It brings us all together.
A. Be patient and be humble. Youāre entering a culture that has its own language literally. Study it, respect it, donāt try to shortcut the process. Find your way in through genuine connection, whether thatās through an artist, a label, or a collaboration.
A. āGoldenā for sure. Such a great song.
A. This song was made with intention. Tae didnāt just show up, he poured himself into this. I canāt wait for all the fans to experience it!
