"I want to change the idol industry", Huh Yunjin, a member of girl group LE SSERAFIM, stated in her introduction video. It hasn't even been a year since their debut, yet both the group and Yunjin as an individual have consistently made an impact on the K-Pop industry; Yunjin has been evolving as an artist while looking for her own color.
On January 9th, Yunjin’s self-produced single ‘I ≠ DOLL’ was released, a song with a very intimate and profound message that many listeners will be able to connect to. Let’s take a closer look at what the artist has in store for us.
From the very title of her single, Yunjin sends a strong and clear message: ‘I ≠ DOLL’, pronounced as “idol”, may also be read as "I am not a doll". According to Yunjin, this track expresses her experience since LE SSERAFIM's debut, as well as her personal thoughts.
During her life, Yunjin realized that rather than considering a person's character, people would increasingly use appearance as the main aspect on which to judge one another. This is especially true when the person is famous; other people feel entitled to pass criticism without giving consideration to how the idol might be feeling. Yunjin uses her song to show that she is more than just a pretty face, but also a human being with many other qualities.
Not only did Yunjin write and compose the song, which has a rock-based sound, but she also created the artwork and animation for the music video. In the music video the doll-like character, who according to the artist, “is multi-dimensional at heart but appears two-dimensional and flat", navigates the attention and criticism she receives as an idol.
With the release of the song, LE SSERAFIM fans, FEAR NOT, as well as many others applauded Yunjin for her talent, for being fearless and raising her voice, and for channeling all the vulnerabilities idols and many regular people face into such a significant song.
This is actually Yunjin’s second self-produced song; the first, ‘Raise y_our glass’, was released to celebrate the group's 100th day anniversary back in August 2022.
Yunjin has demonstrated in less than six months that she is eager to revolutionize the industry and continue releasing songs and art that reflect her sentiments and ideas, in order to make us view what's beyond what we can't see, and we are excited to see what's next for her and the group.
