How many times have you dreamed of creating something incredible? As humans, it’s natural that our desire to create something grows stronger the more we watch and listen to inspiring things like music. Well, what if we told you that you can now directly contribute to the K-Pop industry's creative process? For Deep Studio Entertainment and the boy band SUPERKIND, K-Pop is all about having fun and creating together.
We briefly mentioned SUPERKIND in our article about K-Pop and the metaverse, as a group that aspires to combine technology and storytelling, so today we’re going to introduce them to you a bit more.
SUPERKIND is currently a six-member group composed of Eugene, Geon, Daemon, SiO, JDV, and Saejin.
At a glance, everything appears to be typical of a K-Pop group, right? However, there is a slight difference in this group, and that is that five members are from our world, and one member, Saejin, is from the virtual world!
Yes, you read that right - member Saejin is an AI idol, but like the rest of his mates, he had to go through “training” for the company to consider him fit to become a K-Pop idol, according to the company Saejin joined the team in 2019 and was an active model on social media beforehand.
The group originally made their official debut as a five-member group on June 20, 2022, with the release of the digital single ‘PlaySuperkind: Apply for a Beta Test’, which included the title song ‘WATCH OUT’. Then, one month later, it was revealed that JDV would be joining the group - in fact, he had already appeared in the debut MV. Can you spot him?
SUPERKIND’s label, Deep Studio Entertainment, was created in 2017 and has only a few trainees, but they have a unique focus as a company; they strive to be the world's first decentralized entertainment company, and rather than serving as a fan management company for SUPERKIND, rather they want to be almost like a game.
They believe that the current state of K-Pop is too passive for the audience and want to change that. They want to create new ways to enjoy and create K-Pop; rather than having fans just watch, they want fans to actively participate into shaping the artists and music they will get to enjoy.
Having an AI idol in the group is already innovative, but this group is pioneering in a variety of other ways as well. There is a fascinating background to the concept behind this SUPERKIND world.
Let's start with the group's name, which is an anagram of PRID, NUKE, and S; but what do NUKE and PRID mean? Well, that's where history actually begins.
There are two types of individuals in the world: The PRID, as represented by the slogan 'WE REMEMBER', symbolize individuals who have a clear attachment to the past and find value in memories; their mission is to protect oneself from danger and grow.
On the other hand, the NUKE, as represented by the slogan 'FOREVER WIN,' are idealists who see the future and strive to embrace the new and modern; their goal is to take risks and seek freedom. You can be labeled as Moderate, Radical, or Extreme between these two categories.
Eugene is PRID-R, SiO and Geon are PRID-M, Daemon is PRID-E, and Saejin is NUKE-E. If you want to know what team you play on, then take their placement test!
And what does the ‘S’ stand for? The meaning of ‘S’ is still unknown, and in order to find it, NUKEs and PRIDs will need to go on a voyage of cooperation and competition. This is the story that will develop over time; in fact, the debut song already indicates that it began with a competition, and as the plot develops, more members will be revealed.
SUPERKIND's universe will be totally based on references from already-existing works of media that fans (aka Players) choose to incorporate. With their ‘intertextuality’ concept, which refers to the idea that everything generated is based on what has already been learned, the group will leverage all of its fans' ideas to create music, choreo, and videos. Deep Studio Entertainment is more than confident that you have an exciting and amazing narrative to share.
All of this is possible by interacting on the group’s platforms like their official Twitter and Discord accounts (their own platform is under development), and it takes place in the ‘No Gravity Zone’, which represents a world where people are completely free to be creative and without restrictions.
The group's debut music video was inspired by the chain story that its fans came up with, and work is presently being done on suggestions for the second MV.
The group is without a doubt pioneering a highly intriguing idea for K-Pop; while it may initially seem odd, this could ultimately reflect what K-Pop will look like in the future. The future is here, and we couldn't be more excited to see what SUPERKIND has in store.
What do you think of this group? How do you feel about an AI member? Are you a PRID or NUKE? Don't forget to comment on the Kooky app!
